Working at the School Of Life

I have dedicated my life for over 35 years to education and music. Paradoxically (perhaps) I am uncomfortable in most schools, which too often seem to be educating children and young people in unfriendly ways for the wrong futures. I am therefore happy to be part of the team at Schule des Lebens Potsdam in looking for alternatives that make sense in our fast-changing world.

The main thing is to help young people become happy, confident and capable older people! Beyond that, I hope to teach a respect for the connectedness of all life, and an understanding that we should be responsible for our actions, and always consult as widely as possible before acting, in order to make the best decisions.

There are many ‚ways of knowing‘ and there are many ’systems of knowledge‘ – or epistemologies. I do not see these in a hierarchy – there are many ways to be alive and human on this earth, as explorer and anthropologist Wade Davis puts it. "The myriad voices of humanity are not failed attempts at being us. They are unique answers to that fundamental question: what does it mean to be human and alive?" Furthermore, we can and do learn from within ourselves: our conscious mind is only one part of who we are. Music plays an important role in bringing our two hemispheres together: the right and left sides of our brains working in harmony. I hope to help bring musicality to everyone at SdL.

It is possible to navigate the world with feeling and intuition as well as critical analytical judgement. We need both. This is my work, consciously undertaken, in the face of the upheavals and distractions of our world. Peace and music!
